Aqua Beba, we’re so glad we found you

As we have a swimming pool and a lake on the family property upstate NY it was a priority for my husband and I to start our Son Swimming lessons as soon as possible. I knew about the Williamsburg/Greenpoint located Aqua Beba Swim School and wanted to check out their vibe and do a drop-in lesson before we committed. Fair enough I thought? However, when I first called to inquire it was politely explained to me that it was a matter of privacy towards the participating families and as each group progressed together it was not fair to bring in curious-not-sure parents to observe a class. Well, the way it was explained left me no choice and on Word-Of-Mouth recommendations I agreed to sign Miles Storm up for his first semester of lessons. And, I am happy to write that we were so not disappointed.

I took our 20-month-old Son 2 weeks ago to his first lesson and by the end of it he was jumping from the side of the pool into my arms (in the pool) and Kick-Kicking his way across to the other side (with me holding him). But wait, by his second lesson (as the photo below shows) he is comfortably being submersioned and swimming under water without a worry in the world. This is a true story and not a word of a lie! I am just so upset I only found about the classes now, as Aqua Beba starts infants as young as 4 months of age in the water.

Aqua Beba is the brainchild of Serbian born Danilo Krvavac and his wife Heidi. Danilo is kind of like a Swim God as Cesar Milan is to Dog Whispering (in my opinion). He has a gift, and people in the neighborhood rave about him.

Heidi told me that when she met Danilo she could barely swim having been intimidated, since she was little, about being in the water. One day Danilo took her to the pool and taught her to swim in 15 minutes. That is amazing! When their first daughter, Penelope, was born Danilo had her in the water as soon as possible thus realizing that there were no heated pools in the area to swim with her in, and that there appeared to be a need for an infant swim school. Presto thankfully Aqua Beba was born!

In her own words – Danilo worked with children in Europe in the past and wanted to develop a unique program that really catered to every child’s need. He has blended so many techniques and styles to make it his own. If a child is nervous or afraid to go in the water we never force them. We work with them at their own pace until they are comfortable. The reason we ask parents to come in the water is so that each child is swimming the entire class verses sitting on the side of the pool while an instructor works with one child at a time. Also we realized that we will not be with you on vacations so parents needed to be involved. We try and keep it fun but we are really more targeted towards getting everyone swimming and safe in the water.

Miles Storm meets “Franklin The Pig”, the urban living legend!

Franklin the blue-eyed, micro-mini Pig is one of Williamsburg’s most beloved treasures. He spends his days (when the weather permits) out the back of Crest Hardware in their gorgeous over-flowing Garden. Last week, I was finally able to visit him for the first time with my Son, Miles Storm. We both fell in love with the Aussie Magpie look-a-like pig! He was so friendly, and beautiful.

According to the website Global Animal “Through a mostly vegan diet — he is allowed the occasional piece of cheese — Franklin maintains a trim weight of 39 pounds. It’s his fan base that’s growing. He can’t trot down the street without being besieged by paparazzi”.

Little Duck Organics – Photo Shoot opportunity. Fun for the whole family!

Who loves Little Ducks Organics – me and Miles Storm do! Besides all of their products being 100% Organic, Kosher, no-sugar added, Gluten-Free & Non-GMO Verified (etc etc) – they have a really cool and fun vibe!

LDO is right up my alley being a holistic do-my-best for the Earth Mum. This is why I am very excited to announce to all the local Greenpoint/Williamsburg parents out there that they are looking for 5 local Little Ones to be photographed for all of their Summer 2012 marketing materials. It is a great opportunity!

If you have a little superstar at home who you want to put forward for consideration, please send hello@littleduckorganics.com a few RECENT photographs of your child, as well your child’s clothing size, their name/age and the best way to reach you. This is open for babies to children up to the age of 6 years of age.

If your munchkin is chosen you will be notified by next Wednesday the 25th of April (you are going to have to sit tight till then). The shoot date is Tuesday May the 8th so your child + one carer must be available on this day in Greenpoint Brooklyn. Shoot times will be determined, and Little Duck will send you more information about that as it gets closer to the shoot date.

In appreciation, Parents (and models) will receive copies of the photographs, a wonderful goodie bag of treats, some clothing from the shoot, an amazingly fun day, and of course lots of love from Little Duck!

Brekkie at “Egg” on North 5th!

Me and my husband have tried to eat at Egg for about 4 years now, seriously! Every time we visited; they were too busy and the wait was too long. Not today though, we were there right on opening at 8AM and able to get a table! Amazing. Apparently others had the same idea as within the next 20 minutes the restaurant was full. There were another 3 families with Little Ones and thankfully there were enough high-chairs to go around.

I love Egg because they grow most of the food they sell at the restaurants themselves upstate NY on their very own space known as Goatfell Farm.  Goatfell Farm provides over 100 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables which is very impressive! I wish I had a farm and could live off the land…. one day! Otherwise, they  buy locally. There are not many restaurants that you can eat at and really feel comfortable knowing where the food has come from. I had the steamed kale and the organic braised tomatoes and it was so yummy. I felt so good eating such a healthy breakfast.

Miles Storm loved Egg because of the complimentary donuts and the crayons that are on every table. He was also flirting with one of the waitresses which was really cute. All the staff are friendly and helpful. He was in heaven. .. which means my husband and I were in heaven and could enjoy our Brekkie! It was a great vibe all around.

The restaurant is open Monday – Friday from 7AM to 6PM and Saturday – Sunday from 8AM to 6PM. It is also CASH only.

Farm to Baby – I Love Your Vibe.

I heard about Farm to Baby through my twitter feed – the Internet is a wonderful thing! I read a ReTweet saying that they were going to be at the Greenpoint / McCarren Park Greenmarket last weekend. I was excited, being a fit and health conscious Mum I knew I had to go and check out their vibe.

Farm to Baby provides home cooked baby food that can be delivered to your door or can be picked up at a set location -  think a CSA for babies. It is a marvelous concept, and giving credit where credit is due, local residents Lauren and Marshall are getting out there and making a difference!

Marshall explained to me -”Fresh fruits and vegetables boast a dazzling spectrum of micronutrients, while jarred-foods cooked at high heats for extended periods of time lose precious vitamins and minerals (and take a major hit in the flavor department). So we’ve made it incredible easy to introduce babies to a broad array of fruits and veggies that boast the very best nutritional profile because they are harvested in season, carefully prepared and delivered fresh to your family”.

“Puppetsburg” at The Brick Theater!

Right off the bat, Puppetsburg WAS SO MUCH FUN. Miles Storm had a Ball. A Very Very Big Ball!

I heard about the Baby Puppetsburg show from another Mum in my building. I have had it on my list of things to investigate since I started this blog, and today Miles Storm and I finally made it over to East Williamsburg, to The Brick Theater located at 575 Metropolitan, to check it out. I feel like I am in East Williamsburg a lot these days. There is so much going on for Little Ones over there.

We made it to the 12.30 show. There is also an earlier show at 11AM. The cost is $16 at the door, or $18.50 online. I did not know that you could pay at the door so I paid online in advance.  Puppetsburg just decided to offer 10 packet deal for $140 which must be used 3 months within buying. If you are interested in doing this you can email them for more information at puppetsburg@gmail.com, or you can pay via Pay Pal on their Blog HERE.

We were not disappointed – the 2 girls who run the show were so warm, loving and welcoming as soon as we walked in the door. They were both very attentive to all the children there and we felt right at home Instantly.

To start, there was a casual play time on the floor where the children played with toys to get used to the environment. Then the music and dancing started. Miles Storm loves to dance. There was BUBBLE and PARACHUTE time, as well as playing with Poms-Poms and shakers. The Puppet show was very interactive, with the children all kissing and hugging the puppets when they had the chance. The theme of today’s show was Going Back in time to the Superbowl, and Clementine the main star trying to solve the mystery of who her secret Valentines was. In case you are wondering, it was her Nanna!!

I think this is going to the first activity I am going to commit too for Miles Storm because he loved it so much – Husband Approving!

*Puppetsburg has also just added a new show at 3.30PM on Tuesdays at the Greenpoint Reformed Church.

Update — This event no longer runs
