Happy 3rd Birthday Super Hero Miles Storm!

September the 16th 2013 marks my Son’s 3rd Birthday, and I have mixed emotions about that. Part of me feels like he is growing up way too fast and everything is slipping by, and another part of me is so proud with the way he is growing into such a happy, considerate and caring little boy. I love being his Mum so much!

Planning his 3rd birthday ended up being a last-minute affair, which was okay as I work really well on deadlines. It was my main responsibility to organize his Birthday Party as my husband, being so busy with work has limited time for domestic duties. In retrospect, this is probably for the better, otherwise we probably would’ve argued over the finer points.

When Miles Storm woke up he had a cake and we sang Happy Birthday to him, yes on this one special day of the year it was Cake for Brekkie. Continuing on at his morning school group he had cupcakes, a BIG Happy Birthday sign and his class sang the traditional song! Later in the afternoon he had his official birthday party! Fortunately, the building we live in has a Children’s play room, which served us well as the venue for his Rockin’ birthday party. He had so much fun and it was a huge success. A lot of his friends came, with Mummies and Nannies alike.

Thankfully, we did have some help from different people who really helped make this a good time all around. The party might not have been so exciting without them!!

The local Williamsburg Brooklyn Children’s indoor play facility Klub 4 Kidz generously offered Miles a free face painter, with Miles choosing to be Batman for the occasion. Klub 4 Kidz is an awesome facility that has an Indoor Rock Climbing Wall, Toddlers Room, a 3-tier playground, as well as a disco room. They offer many special events as well as amazing birthday parties. Thank-you Tina for that!

One of our friends and up and coming celebrity photographer, Brock Fetch, came and took the photos of Miles Storm’s birthday party. So grateful for that, as now we have physical keepsakes (not just Iphone photos) to remember this day always. Miles and Brock have a very special relationship having quickly bonded over a short amount of time together, which is very interesting to watch!

Also, want to give a HUGE thank-you to the Bedford Baking Studio for making the most amazing vegan, gluten-free birthday cake and cupcakes. All the cupcakes went so fast, and the cake was not too far behind. Who says you need dairy products in cakes? I remember going into Bedford Baking Studio for Miles Storm’s 2nd Birthday last year to ask if they did Gluten Free or Vegan products and the answer was a definite No. A year later, the same bakery offers many many options in these categories. Surely a sign of the times. If you are in Williamsburg Brooklyn and need a cake I highly recommend a visit to the owner Tolga, he is so accommodating and willing to work with you to create something amazing.

Happy 3rd Birthday Super Hero Miles Storm!

Thanks for reading my BLOG!

PS – In case you are wondering who did the awesome artwork on the blackboard, it was me! Ha.

Let’s visit the Prospect Park Wonderland in Brooklyn!

Last week, I decided to take Miles Storm on a day trip to Prospect Park, which is in Brooklyn about 4 miles from where we live in Williamsburg. It was a pleasant day, he’d slept in late (amazing as therefore so did I) and as a result we had missed his morning art-class meaning that I had to come up with another activity to keep him entertained. I have lived in NYC for 10 years, and Prospect Park has been one of the places I have always wanted to visit however it never happened – the same with The Intrepid and the American Museum of Natural History. Now that Miles Storm is here it looks like all that will finally manifest, as goodness knows I have tried to convince my husband to tag along with me for years to no avail!

The 585 acre Prospect Park is a wonderful wonderful space which was designed by the same revolutionary who designed Central Park (as well as many other parks) from the mid 1800′s onwards – Frederick Law Olmsted. Frederick, known as the founder of landscape architecture is one man I would love to go back in time and meet to say thank-you! The contrast of being able to step off a crazy busy city Street into a nature wonderland is magical – there is a Zoo, a Carousel, the old-time Lefferts farm-house, library, so many beautiful old trees and the gorgeous Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. And, this is only in vicinity of where we were, there is so much more to see! New York City is truly blessed to have such a place to visit.

We started at the Zoo, where we visited the Sea Lions, Toucans, Dingoes, Red Pandas and Turtles. The Zoo is quite quaint being able to see it all in about 2 hours. There is a nice grassed area to sit down for a picnic and eat your own food, unless you want to buy snacks from the vending machines on site. I wish I had known this beforehand as I was expecting at least a café of some sort.

Next up, we went for a ride on the Merry-Go-Around. Yay, I love Merry-Go-Arounds! The Carousel is as vintage as can-be having this month having celebrated 100 years in operation. It boasts a dragon drawn chariot, a lion and 53 magnificently designed horses. Can you imagine the hundreds of thousands of children that have ridden on it over the years? Word of Warning – The ride gets really fast at one point, the wind was whipping through our hair at speed and we really had to hold on for dear life. And, how we laughed, what is it about carousels that just make you laugh? Good times!

By this stage, Miles Storm was getting sleepy with all the excitement, and there was still so much to do. We crossed the road to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, which is $10 admission, and totally worth every cent. Miles Storm played in a child friendly area which had a water table and a dirt pit where he looked for worms…. he was covered from head to toe in dirt. Then just like that, he was in his pram and fast asleep. Wake up Miles Storm Wake Up! I mean, we only were able to see such a small part of the Botanical Gardens. However, before we left I was able to sit down, take a deep breath and eat a top-notch kale/arugula salad at the outdoor café, and I am fussy so be assured it was delicious!

I wish we could have stayed all day, and I cannot wait to visit the Park again soon.

Aqua Beba, we’re so glad we found you

As we have a swimming pool and a lake on the family property upstate NY it was a priority for my husband and I to start our Son Swimming lessons as soon as possible. I knew about the Williamsburg/Greenpoint located Aqua Beba Swim School and wanted to check out their vibe and do a drop-in lesson before we committed. Fair enough I thought? However, when I first called to inquire it was politely explained to me that it was a matter of privacy towards the participating families and as each group progressed together it was not fair to bring in curious-not-sure parents to observe a class. Well, the way it was explained left me no choice and on Word-Of-Mouth recommendations I agreed to sign Miles Storm up for his first semester of lessons. And, I am happy to write that we were so not disappointed.

I took our 20-month-old Son 2 weeks ago to his first lesson and by the end of it he was jumping from the side of the pool into my arms (in the pool) and Kick-Kicking his way across to the other side (with me holding him). But wait, by his second lesson (as the photo below shows) he is comfortably being submersioned and swimming under water without a worry in the world. This is a true story and not a word of a lie! I am just so upset I only found about the classes now, as Aqua Beba starts infants as young as 4 months of age in the water.

Aqua Beba is the brainchild of Serbian born Danilo Krvavac and his wife Heidi. Danilo is kind of like a Swim God as Cesar Milan is to Dog Whispering (in my opinion). He has a gift, and people in the neighborhood rave about him.

Heidi told me that when she met Danilo she could barely swim having been intimidated, since she was little, about being in the water. One day Danilo took her to the pool and taught her to swim in 15 minutes. That is amazing! When their first daughter, Penelope, was born Danilo had her in the water as soon as possible thus realizing that there were no heated pools in the area to swim with her in, and that there appeared to be a need for an infant swim school. Presto thankfully Aqua Beba was born!

In her own words – Danilo worked with children in Europe in the past and wanted to develop a unique program that really catered to every child’s need. He has blended so many techniques and styles to make it his own. If a child is nervous or afraid to go in the water we never force them. We work with them at their own pace until they are comfortable. The reason we ask parents to come in the water is so that each child is swimming the entire class verses sitting on the side of the pool while an instructor works with one child at a time. Also we realized that we will not be with you on vacations so parents needed to be involved. We try and keep it fun but we are really more targeted towards getting everyone swimming and safe in the water.

Miles Storm meets “Franklin The Pig”, the urban living legend!

Franklin the blue-eyed, micro-mini Pig is one of Williamsburg’s most beloved treasures. He spends his days (when the weather permits) out the back of Crest Hardware in their gorgeous over-flowing Garden. Last week, I was finally able to visit him for the first time with my Son, Miles Storm. We both fell in love with the Aussie Magpie look-a-like pig! He was so friendly, and beautiful.

According to the website Global Animal “Through a mostly vegan diet — he is allowed the occasional piece of cheese — Franklin maintains a trim weight of 39 pounds. It’s his fan base that’s growing. He can’t trot down the street without being besieged by paparazzi”.

Who loves Little Ducks Organics – me and Miles Storm do! Besides all of their products being 100% Organic, Kosher, no-sugar added, Gluten-Free & Non-GMO Verified (etc etc) – they have a really cool and fun vibe!

LDO is right up my alley being a holistic do-my-best for the Earth Mum. This is why I am very excited to announce to all the local Greenpoint/Williamsburg parents out there that they are looking for 5 local Little Ones to be photographed for all of their Summer 2012 marketing materials. It is a great opportunity!

TriBeCa Pediatrics – Dr Wittek is the Proof in the Pudding!

Is there any other Pediatrician to go to if you live in Williamsburg other than TriBeCa Pediatrics? If there is, I do not know about it, but considering they are only a few blocks from our apartment I cannot say that I’ve ever looked for another.

Tribeca Pediatrics has been at 212 Berry Street for about 4 years. They are also located on the Upper East Side, Chelsea, Park Slope, Harlem, Greenpoint, Long Island City and of course TriBeCa where they originated 10 years ago.

Personally, we have 2 pediatricians we use for Miles Storm. One is 31 year practicing Dr Joseph Malek who is Bambini Pediatrics upstate in Poughkeepsie – he is somewhat of a living legend in the modern-hippie Mum world up there and has a cult following (true story). His practice is holistic, does not necessarily push the immunizations and prefers natural remedies to cure problems.

And, locally we use the very traditional TriBeca Pediatrics.

We have a house upstate where we spend a lot of time, and being a holistic Mummy I wanted to have contrast and varying opinions so when I chose our upstate pediatrician I went with Dr Malek. You know, this way we hear the theories from both sides of the fence.

Since our Son was born, depending on the feedback from the varying trains of thought, sometimes we have leaned towards Bambini Pediatrics suggestions and other times Tribeca Pediatrics suggestions. For example, my Son has had all of his immunizations except his Chicken Pox and MMR – Bambini Pediatrics told us that if we do decide to immunize Miles Storm we could wait till he is 2 years old, where as Tribeca Pediatrics very much pushed for him to have it at 12 months; which we just couldn’t do! Are we going to immunize him against measles and chicken pox, we are still not sure? We go back and forwards about it all the time.

The hands-down best thing about Tribeca Pediatrics (beside the organic lollipops) is two-time-Mummy Dr Dominika Wittek. She was a God-Send for me when I went through troubling times not long after my Son was born. Being so far from my home, family and friends in Australia I truly do not know what I would have done without her support and advice. She called me on the phone to check in with me and was available to me via email. I cannot even put in to words what a beautiful and genuinely caring Doctor she is. I am one of her biggest fans, and I highly recommend her to any new local Mums out there looking for someone to watch over your Little One as they grow.

Tribeca Pediatrics also offer classes in CPR, Essential Baby Care, Breastfeeding Preparation and Preparation for Childbirth. You can find out more information about this at their webpage www.tribecapediatrics.com

CHILDREN GROW SO FAST!

I am trying, my hardest, to sell some of Miles Storm’s equipment that he has grown out of and is now sitting around our apartment gathering dust – a gorgeous white Alma cot, a exersaucer and a Mamaroo! I’ve advertised on many websites to no avail. So when another Mother told me about Flying Squirrel as a great resource to sell “gently used” clothing/equipment I headed down to North 6th to check out the store.

I noticed the store walking down North 6th as there was a Bugaboo parked on the footpath out the front for sale! Apparently, the Bugaboos go like hot cakes. Personally I cannot imagine EVER giving up my Bugaboo!

Flying Squirrel has been in the “Willy B” area since 2003 providing second-hand, NEW & high-end clothing/accessories, toys and gently-used equipment to the masses. The Store is PACKED to the brim!

Here is the deal if you want to sell your clothing – .

1. Drop Off a small Your-Name bag of 30 items max for the buyer in-store to consider for re-sale.

2. Flying Squirrel will evaluate the merchandise, as soon as they can, and call you back with the terms.

3.  They offer 50% of retail price in-store credit, when sold. OR, 25% of retail price paid via check, when sold.

4. If they are not interested in buying your clothing they will give it to charity. Or, you can come and pick it back up.

The woman in the store was SO helpful, she really made me feel very welcome, which made me feel like I should buy something – so I did! It is so hard to walk into a Children’s store and not buy at least a little something. Well, for me anyway!

Flying Squirrel is open Monday to Thursday from 11:00AM till 7:00PM, Friday to Saturday from Noon till 8:00PM and Sunday Noon till 7PM.

Update — Since writing this post the Flying Squirrel is now at the new location of 87 Oak Street, Brooklyn. We suggest calling them in advance with any questions 718 218 7775

Brekkie at “Egg” on North 5th!

Me and my husband have tried to eat at Egg for about 4 years now, seriously! Every time we visited; they were too busy and the wait was too long. Not today though, we were there right on opening at 8AM and able to get a table! Amazing. Apparently others had the same idea as within the next 20 minutes the restaurant was full. There were another 3 families with Little Ones and thankfully there were enough high-chairs to go around.

I love Egg because they grow most of the food they sell at the restaurants themselves upstate NY on their very own space known as Goatfell Farm.  Goatfell Farm provides over 100 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables which is very impressive! I wish I had a farm and could live off the land…. one day! Otherwise, they  buy locally. There are not many restaurants that you can eat at and really feel comfortable knowing where the food has come from. I had the steamed kale and the organic braised tomatoes and it was so yummy. I felt so good eating such a healthy breakfast.

Miles Storm loved Egg because of the complimentary donuts and the crayons that are on every table. He was also flirting with one of the waitresses which was really cute. All the staff are friendly and helpful. He was in heaven. .. which means my husband and I were in heaven and could enjoy our Brekkie! It was a great vibe all around.

The restaurant is open Monday – Friday from 7AM to 6PM and Saturday – Sunday from 8AM to 6PM. It is also CASH only.

Farm to Baby – I Love Your Vibe.

I heard about Farm to Baby through my twitter feed – the Internet is a wonderful thing! I read a ReTweet saying that they were going to be at the Greenpoint / McCarren Park Greenmarket last weekend. I was excited, being a fit and health conscious Mum I knew I had to go and check out their vibe.

Farm to Baby provides home cooked baby food that can be delivered to your door or can be picked up at a set location -  think a CSA for babies. It is a marvelous concept, and giving credit where credit is due, local residents Lauren and Marshall are getting out there and making a difference!

Marshall explained to me -”Fresh fruits and vegetables boast a dazzling spectrum of micronutrients, while jarred-foods cooked at high heats for extended periods of time lose precious vitamins and minerals (and take a major hit in the flavor department). So we’ve made it incredible easy to introduce babies to a broad array of fruits and veggies that boast the very best nutritional profile because they are harvested in season, carefully prepared and delivered fresh to your family”.

Baby Boot Camp. Let’s Get Physical.

Wow, was Miles Storm a terrorist or what today at Baby Boot Camp? All of a sudden he is super interactive with other babies…. pity all the other babies at class were younger than him and just not feeling his vibe!

I have been looking for another exercise class to do in “Willy B” on the alternate days to which “Mighty Mamas” run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a while now – exercising only 2 days a week is not enough for me. Thankfully, having started 6 months ago Baby Boot Camp  is executed at Caribou Baby and the Betz Method Gym in Greenpoint on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the week. Perfect compliment to “Mighty Mamas”.

I went to my first class last week and I am happy to report it was extremely challenging physically. Big points here because as if us Mums have time to dilly-dally. Let’s get our bodies back in minimal time with maximum effort!

Jody Camarra heads up the group in the WIlliamsburg/Greenpoint Chapter. Having recently had a beautiful daughter, and not wanting to go back to work she started Baby Boot Camp in September of 2011. I am so happy she did, and I know that a lot of other Mummies in our neighborhood are also grateful.

The class differs slightly to “Mighty Mamas” in that it is not encouraged that children are out of the pram, if possible. Miles Storm was a little confused about this at first…..

On Fridays the class is held at the Betz Method Gym and it is not entirely baby proof. I had to EVENTUALLY let my Little One out of his pram as it was too much for him to sit and watch us all run around the room. He threw a small fit – Fair Enough – he wanted to explore! To compromise, all the Mums and the instructor helped me to make sure he did not get into too much mischief. TEAM WORK!

The Wednesday class at Caribou Baby is a lot more relaxed if you have an older baby/toddler, and it is not so necessary that Little Ones are kept in their pram from a safety standpoint.

If you are interested in attending a Free Trial class  you can email Jody directly at jody.camarra@babybootcamp.com and she will happily send you more information.

Up and At ‘Em “WIlly B” – hopefully me and Miles Storm will see you in a class soon!
