Visuals of my Birthday – August the 18th 2012!

Many many years ago, on this day, in the city Melbourne, in the state of Victoria, in my gorgeous sunburnt country of Australia I was born. Although I do not remember much of that day, today that is not going to be the case!

Starting at 10AM this morning, and every hour on the hour up until 9PM I am going to post a photo of what I am doing on my birthday upstate NY in Dutchess County. What a great idea, I wish I had done this for all of my birthdays.

Steam Facial Baths are super easy to do at home

When I was a little girl, I regularly did facial steam baths at home to loosen dirt and debris lodged in the pores of my skin. Maybe this has contributed to why I have such lovely skin at my age, I am sure it definitely helped! Now that I am older I do not do them nearly near as much, but I try my best to get to it when I can. They are a wonderful way to deep-clean, rejuvenate & moisten, as well as smoothing out skin tone. I highly recommend adding it to your beauty regimen if you can.

Home Facial Steam Baths are really easy to do (I know I write that a lot on this Blog but it is the truth), and a great alternative to getting them done at a professional salon as part of a facial. And, let’s be honest if you are a Stay-At-Home-Mum who has the time to go and have a facial? Not me that is for sure.

Here’s What to Do -

  • In a heat-resistant bowl (set securely on a table) place your choice of dried herbs from your kitchen into a large bowl, also add some fresh herbs and a few drops of any essential oil of your choice.           **I know this is broad but you really can use anything – I generally use what ever I have lying about. For example, in this particular steam I used a few drops of rose oil, dried oregano, chives, mint, rose petals, chamomile and fresh-from-the-garden sage, rosemary & basil.
  • Sit at the table with a towel draped like a tent over the top of your head (which helps keeps moisture on the skin) and the steam bath bowl.
  • Hold your face 8 inches from the bowl of hot water, and keep it under the tent for as long as you can (at least 5 minutes).
  • Close your eyes, breathe deeply, relax and enjoy the beautiful fragrances.
  • Rinse your face with warm water, then gently wipe an astringent like witch hazel over your face.
  • Gently splash cool water on your face, and pat the skin dry with a soft towel.
  • It is not necessary, but I always use a clay mask on my face after I have done a steam bath.

The Most AMAZING Raw Cacao Coconut Truffles you have ever tasted.

When my Son and I were in Australia 5 months ago visiting home, one of my girlfriends made this yummy creation for me – Raw Cacao Coconut Truffles.

Today I decided to try them out for myself (altering the recipe somewhat) and I am so glad I did. I know that this is now going to be a staple in our home. They are AMAZING and Super-Easy to make!

It is not a word of a lie when I say that you can make these in 15 minutes, and what a healthier alternative to eating traditional sweet snacks which are generally packed with dairy ingredients like milk, cream, sugar and eggs.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 cup organic almond meal
  • 1 cup organic shredded coconut
  • 3 tbs raw organic cacao powder
  • 3 tbs organic maple syrup (or you can use honey or agave nectar)
  • 1 tbs organic coconut oil
  • Pinch Celtic sea salt

WHAT TO DO

  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a bowl with a spoon. If this is not effective in making all the ingredients moist try massaging with your hands.
  • Place mixture on a large sheet of plastic wrap, make into a roll, then thoroughly cover with wrap and place in fridge. Leave in fridge to harden for at least a few hours
  • Once out of the fridge, remove wrap and roll completely cover in shredded coconut
  • Cut into 1 inch pieces and it is ready to serve!

Two Dogs and A Baby

We have two dogs, 9-year-old Rockstarr Alan Jackson the 3rd who is a pit bull rescue that we have had since he was 6 weeks old, and 7-year-old Mohawk Anne Dimebag a pedigree British Bulldog who we have also had since she was a baby. As trying as it has been the last 2 years, they are both beautiful beings who my family loves very much and cannot imagine being without.

Before Miles Storm was born we were adamant that we would have no adjustment issues with the dogs once he was born, but we could not have been further than the truth. Wow, what an uproar the change was, and I think that it is something that new parents can never really prepare for especially if you have pets. There was a period, I am embarrassed to write, when we seriously had to consider finding new homes for both of them as we could not cope with the extra responsibility and we felt incredibly guilty, instead they spent a lot of time at a boarding facility upstate NY – Patty’s Pet Palace. Thankfully they love being at Patty’s Pet Palace!

Rockstarr and Mohawk were the center of my husband and my life’s for many years – they both had MySpace pages, they went everywhere with us and we even let them sleep in bed with us at night. But, not anymore!

I feel bad about it, but they are definitely left to entertain themselves a lot more these days as all of my time and my husband’s spare time revolves around Miles Storm. Both of the dogs took it very hard at first but now, being 2 years later, I think they have adjusted to their new way of life and are happy again. And, even though me and my husband do not have as much time for them, they are still both very well taken care of and have a beautiful life. More importantly though, Miles has picked up in the “giving attention area” where we lack. He adores his dogs, he really does, the 3 of them are very close. He fancies Mohawk more and honestly loves playing, feeding, cuddling and lately taking both of them for a walk. He even holds the leash all by himself. It is gorgeous to see the way the way they are all growing up together.

Before my Son was here, people expressed a variety of different opinions about having dogs around a newborn, opinions ranged to they might get jealous and attack the baby to they might be super protective of the baby. Everybody Has An Opinion When You Are Pregnant!!! I mean, personally I was never concerned about having either of them around Miles, not in the slightest bit. I knew I could handle it and no matter what the outcome I would make it work.

Expectantly, when Miles was around one-year-old and had just starting to walk by himself, Rockstarr and Mohawk, both snapped at him once or twice when he was bothering them to the extreme, like trying to sit on them or pulling on their ears. This stopped very quickly with me there to reprimand both Rockstarr and Mohawk though, they understood straight away, and nothing like that has happened since. This is something that had to happen so the 3 of them were clear of boundaries and knew where they all stood in the hierarchy of the family. I see it as a positive direction in establishing a safe and secure household for everybody.

I am a firm believer of the importance of having pets in the home. The benefits are endless; children will have less allergies (if any), they learn about and how to respect other beings, learn how to follow directions (such as putting a dog in his crate at night), develop confidence and explore freedom! Additionally, learning how to properly care and feed an animal prepares a child for caring for others. All around, it is just wonderful experience!

Here are some photos of the last 2 years of Miles Storm spending time with his two best friends – Rockstarr and Mohawk!
